'ABSTRACT In the world today the term \'\'function\'\' in architecture has been described and criticized in so many ways and forms. From the historical nature of the world, function became the term used frequently in the modern architectural era prior the late 19th century.Functionalism is a term which signifies a point of view toward architecture, it has no simple definition of the word upon which all agreed. The basic premise that form should follow function becomes a guiding principle for the designer, which was evolved by Louis Sullivan, who sees the form as an expression of function, while each function creates its own form. Functionalism is therefore a value. The study of the backgrounds of functionalism in architecture involves the larger problem of the value of use and specifically, the place of fitness in beauty. The meanings of the terms used-function,fitness, utility, and purpose varies from one writer to the other. The concept of the term function will be clearly categorized from the classical eras. Critical analysis will be profoundly investigated on the term function and functionalism. This research will be categorically deliberated from the 19th century - 20th century. This study will investigate theoretically the term function in architecture, how it has been effectively used in the architectural world and how it influenced contemporary architects. The concept of function in architecture will be examined, how the term is related to other terminologies like rationalism and aesthetics, showing images and plans of building , and identifying basic parameters which defined the level of functionalism in such building of the architect. The fore runners which are described in this text are categorized as the pioneers who originated the term functionalism from their design principles or approaches. In this research,functionalism will be a key word, and caregorically focused on the pros and cons which it brought about from 19th century - 20th century. Also finally the critics of the term function will be reviewed showing its merits and demerits to the society. It is a qualitative research;data will be collected from literature sources. Theories of architects will be reviewed and analyzed. Visual materials will be used to show designs based on the functionalist principles of the master architects mentioned. The study will serve as a guide for architects and design learners knowing how form and function relates to a building; it\'s theoretically analysis and the wide range of understanding function, form and functionalism is in architecture. ÖZET Günümüz dünyasında mimarlikta ''fonksiyon'' kelimesi çok çeşitli yollar ve biçimlerle tanımlanmış ve eleştirilmiştir. Dünyanın tarihi doğası gereğı fonksiyon, geç 19 . yüzyıl öncesi modern mımarlık döneminde sıklılkla kullanılmıştır . Fonksiyonalizm, mimarlığa bakışı belirten bir terimdir, tanımı üzerinde herkesin anlaşabildiği bir kelime değildir. ''Form fonksiyonu izler'' temel önermesi formu fonksiyonun dişavurumu olarak gören ve her fonksiyonun kendi formunu oluşturduğunu düşünen Louis Sullivan tarafından geliştirilmiş ve ve tasarımcı için temel yönlendirici prensip haline gelmiştir. Fonksiyonalizm bu yüzden bir değerdir. Mimarlıkta fonksiyonalizmin arka planı üzerine çalışmalar kullanım değeri ve özellikle güzelliğin buradaki yeri açısından daha büyük problemler içermektedir. Foksiyon, uygunluk, yararlılık, ve amaç gibi kavramların anlamlari bir yazardan diğerine değişmektedir. Fonksiyon teriminin genel kavramı klasik dönemden beri çok net sınıflandırılmış; eleştirel analizler, fonksiyon ve fonksiyonalizm üzerine ciddi bir şekilde yapılmışter. Bu araştırma kategorik olarak 19. yüzyıldan 20. yüzyıla uzanmaktadır. Çalışma mimarlıkta fonksiyon terimini teorik olarak inceleyecek, mimarlık dünyasında nasıl etkili kullanıldığını ve çağdaş mimarları nasıl etkilediğini araştıracaktır. Mimarlıkta fonksiyon kavramının rasyonalism ve estetik gibi diğer terminolojılerle kurduğu ilişki incelenecek; yapıların planları imajlari ve fonksiyonalizmi tanımlayan seviyenin kimlik oluşturan temel parametreleri verilecektir. Metinde adı geçen öncüler tasarım prensipleri ve yaklaşımları ile yol açan ve fonksiyonalizm terimini ilk ortaya koyanlardır. Bu araştırmada fonksiyonalizm anahtar kelime olacak ve 19. yüzyıldan 20. yüzyıla artı ve eksilerine odaklanacaktır. Ayrıca fonksiyon terminin topluma kattığı değerler ve oluşan hataların eleştirisi de ğozden geçirilecektir. Bu, niteliksel bir araştırmadır; veriler literatür taraması sonucu elde edilecektir. Mimaların teorileri ğozden geçirilecek ve analiz edilecek; görsel malzemeler,belirtilen usta mimarların fonksiyonalist prensiplerine dayalı tasarımlarını gösterecektir. Bu çalışma teorik analizi ile mimarlar ve tasarım eğitimi alanlar için ''form ve fonksiyon bir bina ile nasıl ilişkilendirilir'' konusunda bir rehber olacak; mimarlıkta fonksiyon, form ve fonksiyonalizm açısından bir bakış sunacaktır.
