' ABSTRACT Coming-of-age narratives have always been of great interest for literary critics, writers and readres of literature across the world. The depiction of coming of age, the passage from childhood to adulthood, in the Eastern and the Western literature has distinctive features due to different factors. Michael Morpurgo's Private Peaceful embodies the coming of age of the European young generation in the First World War, and in its utmost essence, the story demonstrates the pathetic descriptions of the protagonist amid the horrors of the war. Gharbi Mustafa's When Mountains Weep, similarly, exemplifies the coming of age of the Kurdish young people at the time of the former dictatorial regime in 1970s and 1980s with pitiful scenes and memories of the misery, trauma and loss of the protagonist. This thesis aims to examine the coming of age in the two novels, Private Peaceful by the British writer Michael Morpurgo and When Mountains Weep by the Kurdish writer Gharbi Mustafa, following the Bildungsroman model developed by literary critics along with psychoanalytic interpretations based on well-known theories concerning adolescence and identity. The study emphasizes the themes of childhood, education, relationship to the family, self-discovery (identity), rites of passage, love and sexuality, and traumatic experiences. As a result, both novels, to a certain extent, follow the traditional Bildungsroman structure and deviate in some aspects, which remodel the narrations superbly and produce exceptional plot structures. Moreover, the protagonists of both novels undergo similar adversities in different contexts and for different reasons. The psychological breakdown of each protagonist provokes disarrays in the course of accomplishing self-sufficiency. Each protagonist is a figure of a distinctive community, yet they both experience, to a certain extent, the same identity crisis, educational difficulties, family relationships, rites of passage, tragedy of love, and traumatic events. Nevertheless, each of them has different attitudes, views, stances towards coming of age challenges because of their different living environment and cultural background. Key words: Literature, novel, coming-of-age narrative, Bildungsroman.'
