'ABSTRACT Reading provides the major source of L2 knowledge in language learning. Being able to read and to comprehend what to read is supposed to be a desired goal for all language learners. Furthermore, reading can be more effective and efficient if it is accompanied by appropriate reading strategies. The current research, which is based on a descriptive design, aimed to investigate the students' awareness of reading strategies and explored the use of strategies by the students while reading academic materials. It also aimed to investigate the possible relationships, if any, between the students\' performance of reading comprehension test and their strategy use. This study aims to observe the possible relationships, if any, between the students\' gender and reading strategy use. The present study sampled the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year male and female students from the College of Humanity at Zakho University majoring in English language in Kurdistan for the scholarly year 2014-2015. 102 participants (55 females and 47 males) participated in this study. A quantitative research method was utilised to collect data. The participants were administered with a background questionnaire prepared by the researcher, the Survey of Reading Strategies (SORS) developed by Mokhtari and Sheorey (2002), and an English reading comprehension test. The quantitative data were collected and analysed by the SPSS program. The data provided some interesting findings, such as the global strategies were the highly used strategies followed by the problem solving strategies. While support strategies ranked the least used strategies among the participants. Furthermore, the results showed the positive correlation between learner's performance in English reading comprehension test and the reading strategy use with its subscales (global, problem solving, and support strategies). This study provided some other results, that reading English materials other than course books had no influence on strategy use, i.e. there was no correlation between the use of strategies with its subscales and reading English materials other than course books. Finding also, discovered that there was no correlation between gender and the strategy use, i.e. both male and female used strategies with almost identical number of frequency. '
