' The aim of this study is to present the formation of the European security and defense structure in the period of Cold War and the following years, and to make an attempt to explain the situation of Turkey, which as a member of NATO has had an important role for long years in the European security and defense structure and has made significant progress in the way of becoming a member of the European Union especially with the development on defense and security policy in recent years. In conclusion, while EU is forming the defense and security structure, Turkey, which has got an important role in the European security, should not be excluded from the structure. The maintenance of Turkey's rights in NATO is and WEU is very important for Turkey on the way of EU. Its position in NATO is Turkey's most important opportunity and for ESPD to have a more effective power than NATO in the future Turkey's membership will be an essential element.'
