ABSTRACT Tangerine (Citrus reticulata L.) is a type of citrus plant. Citrus is a genus of flowering plants in the family Rutaceae and a common name for edible fruits of this genus. Citrus contains phenolic bioactive compounds which confirred a powerful antioxidant, antiinflammatory and anticancer properties. Therefore this research is aimed to evaluate the phytochemical and antioxidant effect of tangerine peels extracts/syilver nanoparticles. The Tangerine peels powder was evalueted for its pharmacognostic properties and then extracted with methanol using maceration and the extract was subjected to the phytochemical studies. The thin layer chromatography (TLC) were conducted using different solvent systems and the Rf values of the separeted component were calculated . The synthesis of Nanoparticles was made using Silver nitrate (AgNO3), and the nanoparticles was charactarized using FT-IR and SEM analysis. The antioxidant activity of the extract were determined using DPPH and Hydrogen peroxide Scavenging Assay (HPSA) using ascorbic acid as standard. The antibacterial activity of the extract and silver nanoparticles was performed using agar diffusion method against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The premilinary phytochemical screening of the extract indicate the presence of tanins, saponins, alkaloids and flavonoids . The free radical scavening activity of the plant extract showed IC50 of 6.17 mg/ml using DPPH, and IC50 of 8.4 mg/ml using HPSA. The ascorbic acid (standard) showed IC50 = 1.929 mg/ml. The Antibacterial test releaved that the tangerine peels plant extract had an antibacteerial activity against the Gram postive Staphylococcus aureus and no activity against Escherichia coli .The results indicated that the extract contain phenolic coumpounds that can scavenge free radicals and inbibit the growth of Gram postive bacteria.
