ABSTRACT Cities across the globe are constantly evolving and expanding, often facing challenging circumstances such as war, conflict, and political upheaval. Public spaces are a critical component of urban structure but are significantly impacted by these circumstances. Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, confronts various issues, including population growth, urban destruction, social disengagement, and limited connections to nature and the environment. The thesis explores the impact of post-war and ongoing conflict circumstances on urban public spaces. It investigates the role of urban design and revitalisation strategies in addressing these issues. Revitalising public spaces in Mogadishu can have multiple benefits, such as promoting social engagement, enhancing the quality of life, and fostering physical development. In light of developing criteria for revitalising urban spaces, the thesis examines wellknown cases in cities that have faced similar challenges, such as Beirut, Sarajevo, Belfast, and Monrovia. Based on the researchers’ perspectives of these cities’ squares, the thesis derives a set of theoretical criteria applied to revitalising public squares in Mogadishu as a primary case study. In conclusion, this thesis highlights the importance of urban design and revitalisation strategies in addressing the challenges urban public spaces face in post-war and ongoing conflict situations. The revitalisation of public squares in Mogadishu serves as an exemplary implementation of the developed criteria, ultimately improving the quality of life for its residents.
