In 1970\'s, before oil revenues become the country\'s economic mainstay Nigeria had a poverty rate of just 35 per cent, And by 2007 within the period of Nigeria\'s new democracy, an estimated 60 per cent of the population and 40 per cent of the urban population lived in poverty. Therefore, this study was designed to analyze the impact of oil rents on the Nigeria\'s political economy aiming to explore the connections between the high rates of poverty amidst enormous inflow of oil rents in the country. The main thesis of the study is that the transition from agrarian to rentier economy model effectively distorted willingness to diversify the economic based as well as polluted the consolidation of democratic principles that is needed to ensure an improved living condition of the Nigerian general public. The study in attempt to justify the claim presented and analyzed data\'s through a historical approach within the framework of rentier state theory. Through a mixture of content analysis of Nigeria\'s transition to rentier economy model, oil boom, oil price decline, responses and its overall impact on Nigeria\'s economic development, in addition with a critical appraisal of the legacies of military rule in Nigeria, transition to democratic rule, reforms and state-society relations. The study insists that oil rents had played a significant role in shaping Nigeria\'s historical development and has contributed greatly to the high level of poverty inherent in the country. From the detailed and well selected data presentation, it showed the extent at which the oil revenues shifted the economic base away from the general population and narrowed it to few individuals associated with the political elites and government officials.'
