'Abstract The present study focuses on the evaluation of the English cultural elements in the new curriculum Sunrise 12, and attempts to show that culture holds an important place in foreign language education. The main aim of the study is to investigate and search this topic because in the (2004 - 2005) academic year, Iraq as an Arabian country, witnessed some changes in English language teaching and the English language programme was replaced by a new one entitled the Sunrise programme which is based on communicative approach. After six years of the adoption, this programme started with 12th grade of preparatory education. Therefore, as a preparatory school English language teacher, the researcher of the thesis thought it is important to find out to what extent the recommended teaching curriculum is being adhered to, whether the teachers are aware of cultural awareness, whether their points of view are positive or negative towards teaching culture in foreign language classes. Regarding the 12th grade, the researcher chose this grade because it's the last grade of the preparatory education; learners are expected to prepare themselves for communicative competence (CC) and they should have some background knowledge about intercultural communicative competence (ICC). In this regards the research aims at finding out; a) Whether the Iraqi teachers of English at preparatory schools are aware of the English cultural elements in the new course book (The Sunrise 12). b) Whether the Iraqi teachers of English are adequately trained and qualified for the teaching of culture or cultural elements in teaching English as foreign or second language, c) Whether the teachers' points of view towards the concept of culture and its teaching about the new course book are positive or negative. The present study falls into the following four chapters: the first chapter is about the introduction of the study, which summarizes the importance of culture teaching in foreign language education. It also offers some definitions of culture and explains some important terms. The first chapter also concentrates on the hypothesis of the study, the purpose of the study, the aims of the study, the procedure and data collection, the research questions, the significance of the study, and the limitation of the study. The second chapter of this study deals with the literature review and the place of culture in the common teaching methods, shedding light on some related previous studies that had been done before on the same topic of teaching culture, and how culture is viewed and used in each method of teaching from the starting of Grammar - Translation method in 1840 till the beginning of the 1970, the year of developing communicative language teaching. The third chapter is about the procedures and data collection on the teachers who teach the Sunrise 12 coursebook of preparatory education in the Governorate of Duhok urban areas which include Duhok centre, Akre city, the city where the researcher lives and teaches in, Bardarash, and Chira. The fourth chapter will be on the discussions, findings and results through the questionnaire which is used to achieve the aims of the study and recommendations are stated for better implementation of the English cultural elements as well as some suggestions for further studies are presented at the end. The results from the research show the following: • English language teachers are not aware of the English cultural elements while teaching the Sunrise 12 in foreign language classrooms. • English teachers\' points of view towards the teaching of English cultural elements are negative. • English language teachers are not adequately trained to be qualified to teach cultural elements in teaching the sunrise 12 coursebook.
