' ABSTRACT Air pollution is a key environmental problem in Nicosia city that is moderately populated with various seasonal changes. This study is aimed at determining the role of meteorological parameters by analyzing the relationship between air pollutants and meteorological parameters using a statistical analysis. A step-wise regression analysis was used to correlate the daily averages of pollutants nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3) and particulate matter (PM10) with the pollutant concentration of preceding day and meteorological factors (wind speed, temperature, humidity, pressure) measured between 2014-2015 data. This can provide significant information about air pollution in Nicosia. According to the proposed statistical model in this study, the pollutant concentrations are not only influenced by the meteorological parameters, however the previous day's pollutant concentrations also have a great influence in contributing to pollution in the city. According to the result, seasonal statistical models together with meteorological parameters gave a regression coefficient (R2) of 0.51, 0.48, 0.70 and 0.73 for O3 in winter, spring, summer and autumn, respectively. PM10 gave of 0.26, 0.16, 0.25 and 0.30 O3 in winter, spring, summer and autumn respectively which shows a weak relationship between them while NO2 an R2 of 0.42, 0.36, 0.70 and 0.69 in winter, spring, summer and autumn respectively which shows a strong relationship.
