ABSTRACT
As a result of the increasing spread of terrorism in the contemporary state of Nigeria with the existence of groups like Boko Haram, Fulani Herdsmen, Niger Delta avengers, Indigenous People of Biafra among others. This study sought to examine the use of social media in terrorist propaganda in Nigeria. This was done through a thematic content analysis of the propaganda messages of Boko Haram and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as major terrorist groups in Nigeria. The results revealed that both groups do not have verified official social media pages through which they disseminated their information hence utilized several independent channels to propagate their ideologies. However, the thematic analysis of the messages revealed that, Boko Haram overtly asserts itself as a terrorist organization, claiming responsibility of several attacks, issuing threats and ultimatums and refuting Nigerian government’s claims of its defeat. IPOB on the other hand refutes its status as a terrorist organization and focuses on distancing itself from related violent attacks despite their attempt at intimidation through weaponry display. Nonetheless both organizations place high importance on indoctrination as a measure to sensitize the public of their aims and mission.
