Özet: 'ABSTRACT Prior to the end of the Cold War, most African nations were under the military, patrimonial, and one-party rule. The end of the Cold War and the emergence of liberal democracy gave rise to the democratization process in Africa. Since the return of Africa to the paths of democratization under the third wave, democratization process has appeared epileptic and inconsistent, beaming new hopes in some countries and faltering prospects in some others. In Nigeria, democratization process under the third wave of democratization appears not to have taken firm roots. The process has been sloppy and haphazard. The democratic experience has not resulted in a significant improvement in the political, economic, and social life of the people. The democratic experience has damaged not only civic orders but also public and private moralities, which have an adverse effect on the leaders and democratic consolidation. The fundamental and essential part of democratic consolidation is the attitudinal and behavioral embrace of democratic principles by the political leaders and the citizens. This thesis aims at using the behavioral and attitudinal character of both the political leaders and the citizen to explain the challenges and prospects for democratic consolidation in Africa, with emphasis on Nigeria, as Nigeria remains the largest economy in Africa and with Nigeria's role in maintaining peace and security in Africa. The study explains corruption, godfatherism, the leadership problem, falsified population census, electoral malpractices and lack of genuine voter registers as challenges of democratic consolidation. In tackling the issues that continue to threaten Nigeria democracy and democratic consolidation, citizen's participation is required at all levels of governance. The study asserts that citizen's participation is a prospect for democratic consolidation. Citizen input to government policies and decision-making process enhances the citizens' influence and increase political accountability, transparency, proper representation and good governance, which is the hallmark of strengthening democracy and democratic consolidation.
