ABSTRACT
Work-Life Balance (WLB) is the point at which an individual manages potential or
real conflict between different demands on her or his energy and time in a way that
satisfies her or his needs for self-fulfillment and well-being. This study examined the
impact of WLB and Job Stress (JS) on Employee Performance (EP) in the Nigerian
banking sector. Understanding the criticality of WLB is essential because it contributes
to the improvement of the performance of employees. On this basis, this study sought
to determine the relationship between WLB, JS on EP; to investigate the impact of JS
on EP in Nigeria’s banking sector, and to examine the influence of WLB on EP in
Nigeria’s banking sector. The questionnaire was the research instrument used to collect
data from 223 employees of commercial banks in Nigeria. The study found that WLB
is negatively related to EP in the Nigerian banking sector. The findings of this study
will help banks in developing countries to develop and maintain good policies which
will improve the performance of their staff as well as improve the performance of the
banks. It was also established that WLB improves EP in Nigeria’s banking sector. As
established by the study, job stress is negatively related to EP in the Nigeria banking
sector. This study recommends jobs and tasks should be designed by the management
of banks in ways that would lead to improved efficiency and effectiveness, thereby
resulting in the improvement of their workforce productivity which will, in turn, lead
to improvement in organizational productivity. To better manage EP and to reduce
stress in the banking sector, this study suggests that bank management should put in
place proper strategies regarding supervision of bankers, interpersonal relationships,
and working hours.
