520 _aABSTRACT Several pavements which are always exposed in most cases are prone to a lot of problems and this usually results in the gradual loss of quality, reduction of safety level, and comfort for the users. A good number of these issues (like cracks, swelling and bleeding etc) occur in the pavement layers of lower severity levels. In Libya, the climatic condition is very harsh and with the weather being hot throughout the most part of the year, there is low maintenance culture regarding the pavement. It results to deterioration of the asphalt and this often reduces the life span of the pavement and causes dissatisfaction on the part of the road users. This study aims to investigate the different approaches that have been employed to manage pavements based on standard criteria in Kums, Libya. Field inspection and classification of pavement using pavement condition index will be studied in this research. This survey is carried out in the city Kums, which is situated up- north Libya. The roadway is one of the most frequented roads in Libya with a total length of about 62000m. It has two carriage ways and four lanes with each lane of 3.25m in width which gives 14m in total with a shoulder of approximately 16meters. This particular roadway is utilized by road users in the country and everyone in general and as such is subjected to a significant amount of traffic load. Approximately over 8,000 vehicles with more than half of it made up of HGV is approximated within the northern and southern region. Pavements analyzed was done using the general steps according to the ASTM standard of practice which includes selecting a pavement area, dividing into section and segments, identifying the distress and severity types, data analysis and presentations. It was discovered that the most common distress is the longitudinal and edge cracking. Results also show that the pavement condition’s result of the road segments for A, C, D and E is between 18- 28. The road section A being 22 which is rated very poor, B being 52 (Fair), C is 23(very poor), D is 18(Very poor) and E is 28 (Very poor) according to the pavement condition index rating. A total of 8 defects were also found in the studied sections. Keywords: Field Inspection, Pavement Classification, PCI, Deterioration, Defects.
