520 _aABSTRACT The study aims to evaluate the impact of Ecowas on Nigeria’s international relations in both fronts politically, regional peace, sustainable economic development and security within the member states of Ecowas. International politics control all of us and have indirectly taken away state sovereignty in most parts of the world and specifically in Africa. The areas which will be of much interest will be the influence of Ecowas, the relations it has with Nigeria, and attending to questions if Nigeria’s role in Ecowas benefits its nations. International politics also influence international organizations and governance and controls states which falls within these bodies. As evidenced by the versatile involvement of Ecowas in December 2016 calming a possible threat to peace and security of Gambia, the Nigerian President Muhammad Buhari was robust in the process of Ecowas’ intervention. Solving Gambia’s impasse when defeated then outgoing Gambian president Yahya Jammeh tried to cling on power made Ecowas to act as the regional bloc guarantor of the western African region leading to the maintenance of Gambia’s sovereignty and peace restored. The dependency of Nigeria on oil negatively affected food security in the country, which makes its membership in Ecowas a beneficiary to the country from the regional bloc. Nigeria is a democratic country and abides by the principles of good governance as per the 1999 constitution. However, despite this constitutional provision and potential Nigeria as a country has good governance and respect of political opponents continues to elusive Nigeria. The study used qualitative approach and secondary data from previously researched and published articles, journals and Nigerian government records on the targeted area of the study.
