520 _aABSTRACT The debate on migration has mostly focused on the countries of origin and recipient countries, leaving a gap in academic research and publications on the impact of migration on transit countries. This thesis aims to fill this gap by examining Libya, which has become a prominent transit country due to its proximity to Italy and the influx of African immigrants seeking to reach Europe. The fall of the Gaddafi regime in 2011 led to the collapse of institutions in Libya, making it an attractive crossing point for irregular immigrants. This situation has had severe consequences on Libya's security and stability. This study investigates the correlation between irregular immigration and demographic and population change in a transit country like Libya. The influx of irregular immigrants has had significant political, economic, and social effects on the country, including a rise in the cost of living, a burden on social amenities, and competition for jobs with the local population, leading to forced migration. The involvement of armed tribal militias and human traffickers has worsened the security situation. This study demonstrates a clear relationship between irregular immigration and demographic and population change in a transit country like Libya.
