520 _aABSTRACT In consideration of the importance of the tourism sector in Nigeria, the study explored the impact of tourist perception over tourism consequences on pro-environmental attitude and behaviour in the Nigerian context. Specifically, the study verified the relationship between international tourists’ perception of tourism consequences and ascription of responsibility, tourists’ attitude toward environmental sustainability and tourists’ environmentally friendly vacation behaviour. It further examined the relationship between ascription of responsibility and tourists’ environmentally sustainable vacation behaviour and tourists’ attitudes towards environmental sustainability of tourism development and tourists’ environmentally sustainable vacation behaviour. Utilizing the quantitative research approach and obtained data from 330 international tourists (participants) using the self-structured questionnaire as well as the convenience sampling technique, the study found that international tourists’ awareness about the damaging consequences of tourism activities had positive and significant relationship between tourism activities, sense (ascription) of responsibility and attitude toward environmental sustainability. On the converse, it uncovered that tourists’ awareness of environmental consequences had negative effect on tourists’ pro-environmental behaviour while on vacation. Furthermore, it revealed that tourists sense (ascription) of responsibility, tourists’ attitudes towards environmental sustainability of tourism development had positive relationship with tourists’ environmentally sustainable behaviour while on vacation. In this light, it suggests that through social media platforms, promotion and organising of public lectures, awareness of environmental consequences of tourism activities can be enhanced. Managers of tourist destinations can plan a variety of environmental education events in picturesque locations to impart to tourists’ perception and awareness. Keywords: Ascription of Responsibility, Environmental Consequences, ProEnvironmental Behaviour, Tourist Perception
