| 520 | _aThis study, conducted through a quantitative research methodology, evaluated the acceptance of mentally handicapped individuals among Nigerian youths from a social work perspective. A purposive sample of 100 youths aged 18-30 completed a questionnaire assessing their awareness, attitudes, and influencing factors regarding mental disability, as well as the perceived role of social work in promoting acceptance and inclusion. Data analysis involved both descriptive statistics and inferential statistics, including Pearson Product-Moment Correlation (PPMC) to test hypotheses. The findings revealed a moderate level of awareness and mixed attitudes towards mentally handicapped individuals, with personal experiences emerging as a key influence on acceptance. While religion and media portrayals had a lesser impact, educational programs about mental health were identified as crucial for promoting understanding. The study underscored the significant role of social work in advocating for the rights of individuals with mental disabilities, providing support services, and raising community awareness. A strong consensus emerged for increased government investment in social work programs to address the needs of this population. These findings provide valuable insights for social work practice, policy development, and future research aimed at fostering a more inclusive and accepting society for mentally handicapped individuals in Nigeria | ||
