'Abstract The present study aims to investigate the pronunciation errors of Turkish learners of English. The study was conducted in the 2007-2008 academic year with 42 participants; 21 Turkish Cypriot and 21 Turkish students. The participants of the study were Intermediate Level Students from the Preparatory School of the Center of Foreign Languages (CFL) of Cyprus International University (CIU) and from the English Preparatory School (EPS) of Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU). The research is a quantitative study in which the data was processed through SPSS analysis. The present study addresses two research questions. The first research question is to find out which English speech sounds are the most problematic for Turkish learners of English, and the second is to find out what the possible reasons that cause the difficulty could be. As sub-problems the effects of gender, nationality, nationality versus gender, high school background and regional differences on the accuracy of Turkish EFL learners' pronunciation of English speech sounds are dealt with. For this analysis, a questionnaire made up of five general questions and a test was administered to the students. The test consists of 125 words which the students read out while they are recorded. In each word a specific sound in one of the three specific positions is tested. In conclusion, all the findings from the research questions were explained and according to the results of the study, 23 problematic English speech sounds in various positions were detected. The study provides explanations and possible causes along with recommendations for further research. Key Words: Pronunciation errors, segmental phonemes, allophones, problem sounds, Turkish EFL learners.
