'Abstract This research study aimed at investigating the role of games in pre-intermediate level (EPS102) students vocabulary learning at Eastern Medıterranean University English Preparatory School in spring semester of the 2007-2008 academic year. To reach this aim, the researcher collected relevant data through pre-test, post-test, student interviews, and teacher interviews. The researcher observed that the majority of Turkish speaking students have Vocabulary learning problems in English at EPS. Therefore, students are not able to use vocabulary in a meaningful way, they experience the communication breakdown, or due to lack of vocabulary knowledge, they are not fluent in English. Therefore, the researcher modified the vocabulary tasks in BNL and chose a series of vocabulary games to be applied to teaching vocabulary in the experimental group whereas the researcher did not change the control group's tasks. Thus, the effect of games on students' performance was assessed with the two tests. The analysis of data indicate that both the teachers and the students like the use of games in vocabulary teaching and also games increase students motivation to learn new words in English. As long as the students are exposed to appropriate games or activities, they have the opportunity to improve their vocabulary learning abilities. Özet Bu çalışma, 2007-2008 Akademik Yılı Bahar döneminde Doğu Akdeniz Üniversitesi İngilizce Hazırlık Okulu'nda (EMUEPS) İngilizce öğrenen orta düzeydeki öğrencilerin sözcük öğrenmesinde oyunların rolünü araştırmayı amaçlamıştır. Bu amaca ulaşmak için araştırmacı, araştırmaya ilişkin verileri, iki kısa sınav sonuçlarından, ayrıca öğrenci ve öğretmenlere yönelik dönütlerinden elde etmiştir. Araştırmacı, İngilizce Hazırlık Okulu'nda İngilizce öğrenen ana dili Türkçe olan öğrencilerin büyük bir çoğunluğunun İngilizcede sözcük öğrenme problemi yaşadığını, bundan dolayı öğrencilerin sözcükleri anlamlı bir şekilde kullanamadıklarını, iletişim kopuklukları yaşadıklarını, veya sözcük bilgisi eksikliğinden dolayı İngilizce dilinde akıcı olmadıklarını gözlemlemiştir. Bu saptamadan sonra araştırmacı İngilizce hazırlık okulu program geliştirme ekibince hazırlanan öğrenci öğrenme kılavuzu kitapcığındaki sözcük çalışma etkinliklerini düzenlemiş ve deney grubunda sözcük öğretmek amacıyla kullanılmak üzere bir dizi oyun seçmiştir. Araştırmacı, kontrol grubunu bu uygulamaya tabi tutmamıştır. Böylece sözcük bilgisini oyunlar aracılığı ile öğrenmenin öğrencinin başarısını nasıl etkilediği öğrencilere iki adet kısa sınav uygulanarak ölçülmüştür. Bu araştırma sonucunda elde edilen verilere göre, hem öğrenciler hem de öğretmenler sözcük öğretiminde oyun kullanılmasını seviyor, ve oyunlar İngilizcede yeni sözcükler öğrenmek için öğrencilerin motivasyonunu artırıyor. Öğrenciler uygun öğrenme faaliyetlerine tabi tutuldukları sürece İngilizcede sözcük öğrenme kabiliyetlerini artırma şansına sahip olurlar.' |
