ABSTACT
This study investigated knowledge management and career development as a
panacea to low productivity in Ekiti State Civil Service, Nigeria. specifically, the
study examined the effect of knowledge management on the productivity of
employees in Ekiti State Civil Service, Nigeria. The study also investigated the effect
of career development on the productivity of employees in Ekiti State Civil Service,
Nigeria. Quantitative research technique was used in the study. Questionnaire was
adopted for data collection among the target respondents across the study area. Two
hundred and sixty (260) copies of questionnaire were distributed out of which 240
were returned and analyzed using SPSS package. The reliability test showed that the
instrument used in conducting the study is good because the coefficient for the
Cronbach alpha is greater than 75%, and the lower the standard error. The regression
result on the effect of knowledge management showed that knowledge (0.205%),
people (0.182%), processes (0.159%) and technology (0.211%) are statistically
significant and have a strong effect on productivity. On the effect of career
development, the regression showed that training (0.199%) and career mentoring
(0.203%) are statistically significant and have strong effect on productivity of
workers in Ekiti State Civil Service. Additionally, the study found that knowledge
management has effect on the productivity of employees in Ekiti State Civil Service,
Nigeria. The study further showed that career progression and advancement affected
employee’s productivity in Ekiti State Civil Service, Nigeria. Additionally, the study
revealed that knowledge management (such as knowledge, people, processes &
technology) have significant effect on worker’s productivity in Ekiti State Civil
Service, Nigeria. Lastly, the study found that career development (such as training
and career mentoring) have significant effect on worker’s productivity in Ekiti State
Civil Service, Nigeria. The study hypotheses tested at 0.05 level of significance
revealed that: (i) knowledge management (knowledge, people, processes and
technology) are significantly related to employees productivity in Ekiti State Civil
Service; (ii) career development (training and career mentoring) have positive effect
on employee’s productivity in Ekiti State Civil Service.
