ABSTRACT
In Addis Ababa, urban parks serve a significant function as a social place where
communities participate in religious, cultural, and political events. However, due to
various factors, their function as urban parks is seriously threatened. The two main
problems in this context are "that there are not enough urban parks for public use" and
"the existing parks are not adequately managed." The study assessed the physical
problems and challenges of urban parks in Addis Ababa in terms of effectiveness and
sufficiency to identify areas for improvement and solutions. Thereby, this research was
undertaken as a case study focusing on Janmeda and Entoto Park. Primary data were
collected from site visits, personal observations, and issue-related photos. Secondary
data were collected from Addis Ababa government agencies, books, websites,
photographs, and other sources. Illustrative figures, tables, and descriptive texts
presented the collected data and reviewed documents.
The park per capita data showed that there are not enough parks in the city to meet the
needs of the population, resulting in 2.89 m2. This is well below most developed
countries (20 m2), WHO (9 m2), and African Green Index (GIA) (7 m2) standards.
Within the framework of the study carried out at Janmeda and Entoto parks, the
research depicted that, like most parks in Addis Ababa, Janmeda park is facing serious
problems related to its physical and operational attributes, despite its importance
throughout history. However, Entoto Park's design of amenities, management, and
safety are a good start and can set an example for future park developments in the city.
The research suggests renovating and restoring the existing urban parks by
incorporating their physical, historic, cultural, and natural features to solve the above
issues. Furthermore, new urban parks should be established with regard to
international standards, user characteristics, and management.
