ABSTRACT
Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs) play a vital role in the socioeconomic
development of Cameroon. They complement government’s efforts in providing
sustainable development especially in the socio-economic sector. Despite this
important role NGOs play in the development process they are faced with a number
of barriers in remaining sustainable. This study seeks to explore the determinants of
sustainability of NGOs in Cameroon. The main objective of the study was to develop
a sustainable model that NGOs could use to overcome these barriers. It also seeks to
examine how factors like income diversification, Organisational Management and
impact investment can determine the sustainability of an NGO. The study targeted

women empowerment in Cameroon; Thus NGO managers, Chief executive officers,
board members and Founders were the main respondents. Simple random sampling
technique was used to identify NGOs to participate in the study. A sample size of
125 respondents was used. A structured questionnaire survey was conducted
randomly in five Likert scales. Data were collected, processed and analysed to obtain
results using regression and correlation analysis. The Cronbach’s Alpha test and also
factor analysis test were used to access the reliability of the questionnaires.
Furthermore, a normality test was utilized to evaluate the shape of the distribution of
tables. Findings of the study indicated that the majority organizations in the sector of
the study receive funding from external donors making up most of the funding
for NGOs which encourages several challenges that poses a threat to their
sustainability. Interestingly, the results reveal that the determinants; Income
diversification, organizational management and impact investment has a huge
positive role on the sustainability of NGOs in Cameroon. This result therefore,
further upholds the main purpose and objectives of NGOs in providing sustainable
