ABSTRACT
Education plays a fundamental role in driving comprehensive national progress and
serves as a pivotal tool for human and economic advancement. However, the field of
Educational Administration in Nigeria has been confronted with various challenges,
encompassing political interference, inadequate planning, lack of qualified personnel,
insufficient infrastructure, corruption, absence of accurate statistical data, insecurity,
and an unstable economy.
The primary objective of any academic discipline is to deepen understanding and
enlightenment across various dimensions of our experiences and the world we inhabit.
This thesis examines the impediments within the administrative framework of
Nigerian schools that impede the realization of sustainable development,
encompassing the pursuit of development that addresses the current generation's
requirements while ensuring the capacity of future generations to fulfil their own
needs. To accomplish this, qualitative research methods specifically interviews was
conducted with ten secondary school principals in Ondo State, Nigeria. Through the
analysis of the interview data, several critical issues emerged in relation to the
administrative barriers to sustainable development in Nigerian schools.
These issues encompass both external and internal challenges encountered by schools,
spanning from limited financial resources and inadequate stakeholder commitment to
ineffective school management and infrastructure constraints. The identification and
exploration of these themes shed light on the intricate nature of administrative barriers
and emphasize the complexities involved in promoting sustainable development
within the Nigerian school system.
Based on a comprehensive analysis of the gathered data, this study puts forth practical
recommendations and strategies to address the identified administrative barriers.
Given Nigeria's status as a developing country, the progress of its educational system
holds immense significance, as the achievements in education serve as a yardstick for
national development. Consequently, it is imperative to establish a clear pathway
towards quality education that nurtures sustainable development.
