ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between time management
skills and teacher burnout in Lagos, Nigeria. Effective time management skills have
been identified as a potential factor in preventing teacher burnout, whose prevalence
in educational contexts has a substantial impact on teachers' well-being and job
performance. For this study, 300 teachers from elementary and secondary schools in
Lagos State were selected from a pool of more than 3,000 teachers. Utilising a
quantitative methodology, data were collected via an online questionnaire. The
questionnaire was adapted from previous studies conducted by Demerouti et al. (2008)
for assessing burnout behaviour and White et al. (2013) for measuring time
management, ensuring the instrument's reliability and validity. The surveys included
measurements of job satisfaction, burnout, time management, and workload. To
examine the relationship between burnout and time management, statistical analyses,
including correlation analysis, were conducted while controlling for relevant
demographic and work-related variables. Higher levels of burnout were found to be
associated with lower levels of time management competence. The study also
highlighted the moderating effect of teacher workload, indicating that the demands
placed on teachers moderated the relationship between burnout and time management.
These results highlight the importance of addressing teacher burnout and assisting
educators in developing time management skills. Interventions aimed at enhancing
teachers' time management skills and decreasing their workload have the potential to
reduce teacher burnout and improve their well-being. In addition, this study
contributes to the existing literature by investigating the relationship between burnout
and time management skills in Nigerian institutions, specifically in Lagos.
Understanding the unique challenges faced by teachers in this region can help
policymakers and educational stakeholders develop targeted strategies to promote
teacher well-being and enhance the educational experience.
