ABSTRACT
Given the long history of hostility and tension between the two nations, the Russian
conquest of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, was not entirely unexpected. Both the
Georgian conflict in 2008 and the annexation of Crimea in 2014 served as blatant
signs of Russia's propensity to exercise its influence in nearby regions. Concerns
about a possible invasion were further heightened by the protracted conflict in
Donbas and Russia's military buildup in Belarus in late 2021. In Russia's perspective,
Ukraine is more significant since it serves as a strategic link between the European
Union and Russia. The nation is a vital transit point for supplies of energy and trade
between Russia and Europe. The complicated relationships between Ukraine and
Russia also result from their shared historical and cultural heritage. The causes of the
invasion are the subject of differing views. Others point to geopolitical objectives
and the intention to undermine Ukraine's pro-European posture, while some claim
that Russia aimed to safeguard ethnic Russians in Ukraine and reclaim control over
historically significant territories. Other suggested motives include preserving power
in the area and economic interests. The invasion had a significant effect on Russia
and Ukraine as well as the rest of the world. Huge numbers of people have been
killed and displaced as a result of the violence. It has harmed Western nations' ties
with Russia, resulting in harsh sanctions and tense diplomatic relations. Concerns for
the stability of the world and the security of nearby nations have also been raised by
the invasion.
