Institute of Graduate Studies and Research Health Care Organisations Management Özet: The research investigated how job-related stress affects the job performance of nurses in both public and private hospitals in Nigeria, particularly in the densely populated states of Rivers and Lagos. Stress was studied as the independent variable, while job performance of nurses served as the dependent variable. Additionally, the study explored the role of motivation as a mediating variable in this relationship. The research had two primary objectives: Firstly, to understand how job stress impacts the job performance of nurses, and secondly, to assess the role of intrinsic motivation, specifically in mediating the relationship between job stress and job performance. Conducted over a period of six months from June to December 2023, the study employed a quantitative statistical analysis research design. A total of 207 nurses participated in the study, with the sample size calculated using confidence interval estimation. This sample size was deemed adequate to achieve the study's objectives and detect significant correlations. The results indicated a negative relationship between stress and job performance, suggesting that increased stress levels could adversely influence job performance among nurses. Moreover, the study found that motivation played a mediating role in the relationship between stress and job performance. This suggests that not only does stress directly impact job performance, but motivation also indirectly affects job performance, providing a deeper understanding of the factors involved. Given that nurses handle patients with various illnesses, identifying factors that contribute to increased stress levels can help in developing strategies to cope with stress more effectively. It is recommended that healthcare administrations conduct regular meetings to gather feedback from nurses regarding their motivation and performance, thereby fostering a supportive work environment conducive to better job performance and overall well-being.
