This study examines how the environment influences the performance of secondary schools in the Northwest region of Cameroon. Its goal is to identify factors that impact the effective teaching and learning of the English language in these schools. Previous research has demonstrated the various effects of the environment on the academic performance of secondary school students. Long, M. H. (1977) states those teachers in such a class can talk to learners in group, rather than individual. The study makes use of mixed-method design, using questionnaire to collect data from teachers and students and a structural oral interview in schools in the Northwest region of Cameroon. The study carried out involves secondary schools located in the Northwest region of Cameroon. One hundred (100) language students were used for the study. The study finding showed that large class-size, unavailability of qualified teachers, shortage of student interest, no home work for students were among the factors identified by the researcher and this will eventually lead to poor performance of students in English language in the secondary schools.
