ABSTRACT
Background: In order to stay up with the quick changes in nursing and nursing
education, Self-Directed Learning is a necessary skill for effective continuous
professional development. Nursing education strives to equip students with the inquiry
skills needed for self-directed learning so they may provide current and pertinent
healthcare and develop into lifelong learners. However, it is unknown how prepared
nursing students who complete the TRNC International Nursing Program are for
independent study. Research aim: The aim of our research is to determine self-directed
learning readiness levels of International Nursing Program students and to determine
whether these levels differ according to independent variables. Method: The study was
carried out in cross-sectional descriptive type. Fisher’s Self-Directed Learning
Readiness Scale for nurses was used to collect data. The study was conducted at
Cyprus international University (CIU) School of Health Science International Nursing
Department located in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). No sampling
method will be used. The participants were first, second, third and fourth year Nursing
students in the CIU. The total number number of nursing students that participated in
the reasearch are 318 most of them are from African countries. Conclusions: There is
no statistically significant difference between the gender, age in terms of their selfdirected learning readiness scale scores and its sub-scales scores. There are statistically
significant difference between the academic level/year of students in terms of their
self-directed learning readiness scale scores and its sub-scales scores. There is no
statistically significant difference between countries in terms of their self-management
sub-scale scores. There is a statistically significant difference between countries scores
in terms of students self-directed learning readiness scores, desire for learning, self
control sub-scale scores. Recommendation: A system should be established for the
development and evaluation of students' self-directed learning skills.
